Using your NERG e-mail address

There are three ways you can use your NERG e-mail address:

  1. Have it forwarded to another e-mail address such as fred@bigpond.com. This can be a very useful feature as it allows you to have a single e-mail address independant of a particular service provider - change service provider and change the forwarding - you continue to get all your e-mails.
  2. Use an e-mail program such as Microsoft Outlook Express to send and receive e-mail - usually called a 'pop-3' account
  3. Use the NERG provided webmail system to access your mail from any computer from anywhere in the world. We have found this to be reasonably fast from anywhere in the world as the site is hosted in the USA and all countries usually have fast connections to there.

Options 2 & 3 can be used together - until you log on from your e-mail program the messages are available on webmail.

How to activate the options:

1. Forwarding to another account

Send an e-mail to Greg VK3VT (callsign@nerg.asn.au) with the details of the address you want fordarding to go to and he will arrange it - likewise to change or remove forwarding.

2. Using an e-mail program

You need to set up your pop-3 account details. This is how it is done for Outlook Express:

1. Start Outlook Express.

2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.

3. In the Internet Accounts dialog box, click Add, and then click Mail.

4. In the Display Name box, type the name that you want others to see when you send a message, and then click Next.

5, In the E-mail Address box, type the e-mail address for the account that you are using (for example, "callsign@nerg.asn.au"), and then click Next.

6. Under E-mail Server Names, type the names of your incoming and outgoing e-mail servers: mail.nerg.asn.au

7. Username: Your full email address - callsign@nerg.asn.au
Password: whatever this was set to be.

NOTE: Make sure Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SAP) is *NOT* checked. Make sure "Server Requires Authentication" *IS* checked.

8. In the Internet Mail Account Name box; type a name to identify the mail account that you are configuring. This is known as the "friendly" name for the account. Click Next.

9. Click the connection type that you use to connect to the Internet, and then click Next.

10. Click Finish.

11. Note in some cases you may need to do the following: -

- Start up Outlook, go into the Tools/Services menus.

- Select the "Internet E-Mail" service and click on Properties.

- Then select the "Servers" tab to display the server name, etc.

- Change the server name to mail.nerg.asn.au if it's not already.

- Tick the box labelled "My server requires authentication"

- Go to the "Advanced" tab

- Below the "Server Port Number" heading, change the "Outgoing Mail (SMTP)"

value from 25 to 587.

Thanks to Mark VK3BYY for that last bit - it solved a problem for a couple of us!

Using the NERG webmail system:

  1. Go to www.nerg.asn.au/webmail/ - this link is on the homepage as NERG Members web-mail log-in.
  2. The log-in id is your complete NERG e-mail address - callsign@nerg.asn.au and the password is that allocated.
  3. There is only one client available now so choose it and away you go.
  4. That's it just type your e-mails and send them off.

Well good luck using your NERG e-mail address and please let Greg VK3VT know if you are having problems.
